The problem

Having a credit balance doesn’t mean having the money in the bank.

Many companies build up VAT credits month after month and write them off, or request them with incomplete documentation and get stuck answering information requests. Meanwhile, that money isn’t working for your business.

For an exporter, a VAT credit balance isn’t the exception: it’s part of the business model. Every month you sell abroad at 0% and pay VAT on your purchases, and the difference sits with the SAT.

If it isn’t requested regularly and with a solid file, that money piles up and becomes working capital that finances the government instead of your operation.

40

business days is the time the SAT has, by law, to resolve a refund. An incomplete file triggers information requests that extend that deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Why do exporters almost always have a VAT credit balance?

Because their export sales are taxed at 0% VAT, while their purchases in Mexico pay 16% VAT. The VAT paid builds up month after month as a credit balance.

How often can I request a refund?

A VAT credit balance can be requested monthly, once the return has been filed. For an exporter, requesting it regularly keeps the balance from piling up and hurting cash flow.

How long does a VAT refund take in Mexico?

The SAT has 40 business days to resolve a request from the date it's filed, but each information request extends that period. A complete file from the start is the best way to shorten it.

Can I offset my VAT credit balance against income tax?

Not since 2019. A VAT credit balance can only be credited against VAT in the following months or claimed as a refund. So if your balance is recurring, a refund is usually the way to recover it.

What happens if the SAT denies the refund?

A denial can be challenged. Our team of tax attorneys evaluates the case and, if warranted, files the appropriate legal remedy.
